Cougars Show Improvement

By Connor Bell

On Friday September 26th, the CAM Cougars took on the Sidney Cowboys in a tough district game.  The Cougars came into this game knowing that it was going to be a very tough game, and that they would battle until the end.  CAM started off strong by scoring first and setting the pace, but soon after the Cowboys broke open a huge run that set them up to score.  From there on both teams knew the game would be decided in the final seconds.  There were some big calls that did not go the Cougars way and set them back a little bit.  The boys kept their heads up and continued to play through the adversity.  The only times the Cougars had the lead were early in the first half and then late in the fourth quarter.   Sidney was up by six points late in the fourth quarter.  With less than two minutes left, the Cougars managed to drive down the field and score, as well as converting the extra two points.  That put the Cougars back in the lead with around 43 seconds to go.  The Cowboys were able to get to the 30-yard line despite the tough defense from the Cougars.  Sidney’s kicker was just in range to knock down the field goal with three seconds left and win the game by one point. The final score was 47-46.  Although everyone was down about the loss, Coach Wollum had a lot of positives to say to keep the boys’ spirits up. “I am extremely proud of our guys and how we handled adversity and fought back.  We learned a lot about ourselves, and hopefully, we use everything we learned and have a great second half of the season.”

Learning Experience at ISU

By: KLani Waters

Mr. Miller’s Horticulture class went to ISU on September 24th, 2014, to see the different parts of horticulture. First, they met Tim Vanloo, the grounds manager at ISU. Then Vanloo took the group on a tour. They got to see Jack Trice Stadium, the indoor football practice field, and outdoor football practice field. Next, they went on a tour through the horticulture green house. Then, went to the horticulture farm looking at various ways to grow new crops and orchards.  Everyone enjoyed the learning experience and had fun doing so.

CAM Raises Money at Iowa State

By: Shianne Cavin

On Saturday, September 28th, some of the CAM Band members (along with a few other volunteers) went to Jack Trice Stadium to work concession stands during the Iowa State football game to raise money for new band uniforms and for the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band members to go to Florida’s Outback Bowl. CAM students who helped out for the day include: Jessica Sandoval, Brooklyn Wendt, Dajuan King, Mackenzie Schwenke, Blake Miller, Konnor Wendt, and David Passehl. Many adults also showed up to help and deserve a big thank-you. The individuals that went met at the high school and left at 1:30 to arrive at the stadium around 3:15 and got back at 1:30 in the morning. Members had to learn the menu, how to make the food, how to serve it properly, and take money. Mr. Amano received a special “Health Inspection” award. The team made $13,000 for the concessions and are able to take home $1,000. That money will be split between the uniforms and SWIHMB trip.

FFA Officer Trip

By: Katie Aupperle

On September 20th and 21st, the 2014-2015 FFA Officers traveled to Moravia to go to Honey Creek Resort. After making a stop in Des Moines to do some shopping at Jordan Creek Mall, the group continued their trip. When they arrived at the resort, everyone was in awe, because it was one of the fanciest places the FFA Chapter has ever stayed. The officers worked on their POA (Program of Activities) and spent the rest of the afternoon at the water park. That night they attended The Maze Runner at a theater in Centerville, which was enjoyed by all! Another new experience for some in the group was a meal at Sonic. They had a good night sleep back at the resort and headed home on Sunday. Those attending were Katie Aupperle, Isabelle Lund, Blake Miller, Tyler Steele, Tierney Sothman, Jenna Heiny and Brooklyn Wendt. The trip, overall, was a success and enjoyed by everyone!

Tackle Hunger Program

By Chris Fuoss

The CAM Cougars will hold their fourth annual Tackle Hunger Campaign during the week of October 6th to the 10th.  The Cougar football team will partner with several area businesses and individuals to collect and deliver non-perishable food items to the Anita Food Pantry. Over 1700 items plus cash donations were collected in 2013, and they would like to surpass these numbers this year.

Boxes will be located at all four school offices two weeks prior to October 10th, where people can drop off donated items. On Wednesday, October 8th, members of the CAM Cougar football team will be sacking groceries and taking donations at Hy-Vee in Atlantic from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Donation boxes will also be located at the entrances to the varsity football game against East Mills on Friday, October 10th. “The Tackle Hunger Game is a great service learning project for our players and community,” said Coach Wollum.

Sponsors for this year’s Tackle Hunger Campaign include: Hy-Vee of Atlantic; Anita Food Pantry; CAM Gridiron; CAM FFA; CAM Sports Club; Gridiron Gals; Stork Fencing; Lefty’s Pump, Plumbing, Heating and Air; Pioneer Seed Pro’s and Rob & Steph Ticknor Family.

Positive Outcome for the Cougars

By: Tierney Sothman

On Tuesday September 23rd, the Cougar volleyball team traveled to Paton-Churdan. This was the only game this week. There was no freshmen game, but there was a JV game. CAM won both JV games by a landslide. “The girls really came together as a team and are starting to play some of the best volleyball they have played all season.  I am really starting to see improvements each and everyday in the girls,” stated Coach Wollum. Varsity also won 3-1 against Paton-Churdan. The scores for the games were 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, and 25-22. Tierney Sothman let the team with four aces, Mackenzie Schwenke led the team with ten kills, and Mackenzie Cross led the team with three blocks. Coach Rasmussen said, “It was a great win for the girls for such a long trip.”

Valley West Mall Wedding

By: Brooklyn Wendt

On Friday, September 19th 2014, Bob Jackson, a former teacher at CAM High School, and Rita Dennis exchanged their vows at the Valley West Mall in Des Moines, Iowa, in front of JC Penney. The couple met on the same day, one year earlier. Not to mention, it was Jackson’s 70th birthday. The mall managers don’t recall ever having a wedding at the mall especially in front of JC Penney. The two found each other on a dating website. They met at the mall, because she put on her profile that she loves to shop. He said he needed to go buy a pair of shoes and black slacks. Later after they met, she moved into Jackson’s house and have been a happy couple ever since. They left on a cruise to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on September 28th.
