BOOMERANG! Team Teachers

By Tierney Sothman

BOOMERANG is a character education program created by the Iowa State University Extension. It is a series of 12 lessons taught to the fifth grade classes, both at the CAM South and North Elementary, based on the Circle of Courage. Eight boomerang team teachers from the junior and senior classes are hand chosen by CAM High School staff. For the CAM South Elementary, Middle School staff also chooses eight eighth graders. Through the BOOMERANG program, students will gain positive skills to share with others as well as leadership skills.  The lessons are taught weekly to the fifth graders during the fall semester.

Little Hands on the Farm

By: Mr. Miller and Katie Aupperle

On August 9, 2014, 11 members of the CAM FFA went to the State Fair to help with one of the most visited attractions. Little Hands on the Farm is a interactive attraction that allow urban kids a chance to see where their food comes from. It gives them a brief agricultural experience without the danger of farm surroundings. The members were at different stations, where they helped and explained the purpose of agricultural activity. The students started at 8:30 am and finished at 12:30 pm and saw a never-ending stream of young people. The members helping were Blake, Tyler, Tierney, Katie, Isabelle, Brooklyn, Morgan, KLani, Shelby, Felicity and Damiana.

New Students and Staff in the CAM High School!

By: Jessica Sandoval and Tehya Hansen

For the freshman class we have two new students. We have Michael Johnson and Makayla Stuetelberg. Michael, 14, moved to CAM from Exira and Makayla, 15, came from Atlantic. The sophomores who have joined us are Haylee Valeika and Cheyenne Pitsenbarger. They are both 15 years old. Haylee moved to the district from Atlantic and Cheyenne joined us from Nodaway Valley. The seniors have added two foreign exchange students to their class. Annais Garzon, 17, is visiting us from Ecuador and Stela Bzriakava, 16, is visiting from Slovakia. So far, all of them are enjoying their time in the CAM district.

Tami Williamson is the new head cook at the high school this year. She used to be one of the cooks for the North Elementary. She has two kids, Austin and Tanner Williamson. Her oldest, Austin, is a senior this year and her youngest, Tanner, is in 8th grade. She lives in Anita, and participates in the ACE Club and Town and Country Club. There are also two new Para-educators who joined us this year at the CAM High School. Ms. Erickson was a Med-aid at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Her favorite thing about working for CAM Schools is that she gets to help students and has many different opportunities. Mrs. Siggins worked at Hy-Vee’s Seasonal Shop in Atlantic. Her favorite part about working here is getting to know all the students and being able to help everyone, not just the students she’s assigned to.

CAM FFA Excels at the Iowa State Fair

By: Mr. Miller and Katie Aupperle

The CAM FFA took sheep, cattle, and swine to the fair this year. There were seven members showing at the 2014 State Fair. Morgan McDermott had a great time showing the reserve overall champion bull at the cattle show. Tyler Steele had three head showing at the swine show. The swine show was a tough show, with Tyler having one placing sixth in some really tough hog classes. Kourtnie, Blake, Jessica, and Adison did a great job with sheep, taking the Superior Chapter pennant again for the fifth year in a row. Tierney Sothman’s Heavy Duck that won “Best of Show” at the Cass County Fair, also won Champion Heavy Duck at the State Fair. Everyone did a great job representing the CAM FFA Chapter again this year.

SWIHMB CAMP

By: Brooklyn Wendt

This is the 30th year anniversary for the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band. There are approximately 190 kids in the program. There were three students from CAM High School who were selected based on an audition. The CAM students selected were: David Passehl, Collin Giegerich, and Brooklyn Wendt. The camp we attended lasted four days, July 29th- August 1st, practicing from 9 AM to 4 PM. The camp was intended to prepare the band to march in the Iowa State Fair parade, but was rained out. Brooklyn stated, “We had tons of fun at the camp and we made some new friends from other schools.” The next time the band meets will be in November to practice for the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida, in December. These students have achieved a great honor and are participating in a once in a life time experience!

Grandstand Ushering

By: Katie Aupperle

This year at the 2014 Iowa State Fair, the CAM FFA Chapter sent four of its members to the state fair for the entire 11 days to usher at the grandstands. Those members included Morgan Ferguson, Katie Aupperle, Blake Miller, and Isabelle Lund. While ushering, they got to experience gate duty for two hours on some mornings where they handed out programs to the fair goers. Also at night, they were required to attend the grandstand concerts, which included Lady Antebellum, Foreigner, Florida Georgia Line, and many more! This was Isabelle and Katie’s second year as ushers and Blake and Morgan’s first. The fair experience was enjoyed by all!
